Whether it is setting strategic direction, developing public policy or addressing community
issues, decision-maker willingness to consider public knowledge, experience, views, and
values as part of decision-making can spell the success or failure of an initiative. Despite
evidence for this, there remain challenges in getting decision-makers to integrate public
engagement into decision-making processes.
Lakeview wrote a white paper for IAP2 to understand reasons for the lack of support for public engagement as part of decision-making in government, and how this lack impacts decisions. A case study was included to demonstrate how one city is integrating public input into decisions.
